Dallas, Texas Travel Guide.

Dallas [1] is the third largest city in Texas, yet is the center of the state's largest metropolitan area.

Dallas was founded in 1841. The city's economy is primarily based on petroleum industry, telecommunications, computer technology, banking, and transportation. It is the core of the largest inland metropolitan area in the United States and lacks any navigability. Dallas's prominence despite this comes from its historical importance as a center for the oil and cotton industries, its position along numerous railroad lines, and a strong industrial and financial sector.

Stay Safe

Go out with a group at night and valet your car so that you don't have to walk far at the end of the night. If you are downtown after dark, there is a fairly large number of homeless people in the area. Uptown and North Dallas are generally very safe after dark. South Side is generally a little bit more rough around the edges than the north sides. Also avoid driving on the highways on the weekends after 2:00 a.m. It can be unnerving because all the bars and clubs kick everyone out at two, so most of the drivers have been drinking and are in a hurry to get home. Cafe Brazil is a 24-hour restaurant that has decent food, much better than Denny's or IHOP, and is a good place to wait out the rush or if you're just hungry late at night. Multiple locations.

In North Dallas, it would be wise to avoid Skillman and Audelia, as there is nothing to see here. In the area just across the Trinity River to South Oak Cliff, there is the Bishop Arts District, a great place for hipsters, but it is surrounded by an iffy area, notably known as Colorado Ave. Keep your wits about you, and no one will harm you at all. South Oak Cliff is not as bad as most people think.

Would advise to stay away from South Dallas unless you are going to Fair Park. It's safer generally during the State Fair of Texas, but don't wander too far away. Fair Park is also safer during the daytime and more tourist friendly during the daytime.

If you are Downtown during the night hours, it is strongly suggested that you don't venture in the Government District, particularly near City Hall. This place is not dangerous in itself, but there are a lot of homeless running about. Stick to the West End.
